Eight

I awoke at 7:45 after a solid night of sleep and immediately began to think about the Pembertons. The apparent incongruity of the wife's story bothered me. Her husband was well liked and admired, yet she'd painted him as a monster and paid me 4G's to help bring clarity to that image.

I needed to learn more about Mr. Pemberton. The casino would be a good starting place, but that would have to wait until evening. Busloads of day tripping senior citizens weren't likely to offer useful leads.

Should I try to investigate more of Ross Pemberton's businesses? It would help to know his itinerary. I dialed Mrs. Pemberton's mobile number again, but there was no answer, not even a man's voice this time. I decided not to leave a voice mail; someone could be monitoring the calls.

A more pleasant thought entered my mind. I had planned to approach Justine at The Rainbow again about modeling. I wanted to show her some head shots, but my files were still on the floor. I rolled toward the edge of the bed. Oh boy, what a mess! Time to get busy.

I sorted through the files and picked out prints of young ladies with fancy hair and make up. I had placed some of these girls with Allegro and was hoping to do the same with Justine.

Véronique had done the styling on most of the shots. I thought about giving her a call. I doubted that she'd be available, but it would fun to catch up again. Perhaps she could recommend someone.

The phone rang. Detective Mazzano claimed that he had information on the Pemberton case and asked me to stop by the station. I asked whether he had bad news, but he said that he'd tell me everything when I arrived. I cleaned up, got dressed, and drove over to see what he had.
